The SWD Health Survey 2010

As part of the breed’s commitment to the Kennel Club’s new initiative of ‘Breed Watch’ it is our aim to collect and record as much information concerning the health of Spanish Water Dogs in the UK as we can.  In order to do this we have produced a Breed Health Survey.
We consider it of the utmost importance that as many owners and breeders as possible are given the opportunity to participate, regardless of whether you are a member of the Breed Club or not. We therefore request that you join in by downloading the survey, one for each dog you own, complete and return it to the address attached.
Rest assured any personal details you include will not be passed on or published in any form but results, mainly in the form of statistics, will be made available to all interested parties.
Please can we reiterate that this is a breed initiative, not just a SWD Club initiative and the overall objective is to record and make available results about the health of the breed as a whole. Those who will benefit from this information are all owners and, in particular, breeders of Spanish Water Dogs.

If you have received a copy of this survey and would like further copies or are a non-member and would like to complete the survey you can download a copy from here in either pdf or rtf format

Spanish Water Dog Club
Code of Ethics
The Spanish Water Dog Clubhas now received a response from the Kennel Club regarding our proposal, agreed at the 2009 AGM, for additional clauses to be added to the mandatory Code of Ethics for our breed.
The Kennel Club have agreed most of our clauses but the clause "Will understand that it is recommended that front dewclaws remain and rear dewclaws (if present) are removed" has not been approved and must be removed.
The Spanish Water Dog Club has removed this clause from the proposed Code of Ethics and has been advised by the KC that the remaining clauses can be brought into effect immediately.
The new Code of Ethics can be found here (Link to Code of Ethics page)

The Spanish Water Dog Club has received the following notification regarding the recording of Optigen DNA prcd-PRA test results.

The Club has also been advised that the Kennel Club plan to add the DNA test for PRA as a recommendation for the Spanish Water Dog under the Accredited Breeder Scheme.

Should this go ahead as planned, the PRA test will be listed at the Accredited Breeder Scheme’s half-yearly update in June/July.

NEW DNA TESTING SCHEME

At the request of the relevant breed clubs, the Kennel Club has recently approved two more official DNA testing schemes.
-          prcd-PRA in the Spanish Water Dog. The test is offered by OptiGen - further details can be obtained from www.optigen.com

-          PLL in the Parson Russell Terrier. The test is offered by the Animal Health Trust - further details can be obtained from www.aht.org.uk
Copies of all future test certificates issued by OptiGen and the AHT will be sent directly to the Kennel Club as from 1st February 2010, where the test result will be added to the dog’s details on the registration database. This will trigger the publication of the test result in the next available Breed Records Supplement, and the result will also appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog.
Owners who have already had their dog(s) DNA tested for this condition can send copies of the test certificate into the Kennel Club and the data will be added to the dog’s registration details. In addition, if the owner includes the original registration certificate for the dog (not a copy) then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA result on it, free of charge. Please send the DNA test certificates to:

Water Weekend EVENT 8th & 9th August 2009

I thought it was about time I updated the Water Training Page as so far this year we have had 3 sessions at our hired venue in the
Rother Valley Country Park at NETHERMOOR LAKE.
Attendance to our planned sessions have  grown with the penultimate being at last weekend’s event which saw many new member’s getting to know each other and their dogs. The weather was fantastic and every one enjoyed the day’s experience.
         P8080219.JPG P8080221.JPG
Taz with Jenny Johnson, gave us a demo of boat retrieving and lead the way
for many of the dogs to try their natural skills judging by the dog’s response they soon followed Taz and showed us how easy it was for dogs of all appropriate ages to  complete this task, many for the first time.

Then Jenny stepped up the pace with directional commands and sent Taz out for a blind retrieve from behind the boat, this is a difficult task which needs to be learnt by the handler and  taught to the dog how to turn right or left or go on, at a distance in water is quite an achievement!
The day was full of learning and new experiences for owners and dogs.

The ever popular Dive Training followed after a night of Rioja and convivial doggy chat around the club gazebo, this time it was Miguel who showed us how to dive, giving a very showy demo despite his dark goggles, does this prove they smell the retrieve article under the water rather than rely on sight, makes for an interesting debate at our next get together?

My thanks go to Jolene for use of her fantastic pool and facilities;
I am indebted to the help of Gill Frost, Titch Noad, Carolyn Bishop and Faye Allan together with my fellow committee members Kylee, Paul, Anj, Jenny and Di who work hard to help enable the SWD Club to host such great events.
Special thanks to our President Joan Hubbord who allowed us to camping her field.
Thanks also to new member Chris for his amazing photos which he has promised to share as a link soon.

Our next scheduled water training session at
NETHERMOOR LAKE is on September 12th2009 at 10.30am
We will be teaching Surf Board Retrieve which is the most common form of rescue taught in Spain.
This means the dog has to swim out to a person and tow them into safety.
Here my dog Cote demonstrates the skill.

And the power of the dog to pull the person safely to land.

PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS TO REINFORCE AND EDUCATE
OWNERS AND INTERESTED PARTIES IN THE TRUE NATURE AND NATURAL
ABILITIES OF OUR AMAZING BREED. BE VERY PROUD OF YOUR DOG AND HAVE FUN complete this task!

The Spanish Water Dog Club Open Show
Appeal for Help

The SWD Club Open Show, to be judged by Antonio Garcia Perez, is to be held at the Kennel Club building at Stoneleigh, on the morning of 6th September, back to back with the City of Birmingham Championship Show, where there are also Champ Show classes for Spanish Water Dogs in the afternoon. (The KC has kindly offered use of their facilities to a number of Breed Clubs, and we are one of those that has taken them up on their offer.)

Our Championship classes are to be judged in the afternoon, so anyone attending our show who wishes to compete in them also will be able to do so. We have to have finished our show and cleared the area by 1.30pm - it is going to be a very busy day indeed.

We are allowed to hold a raffle and a tombola to help towards Club funds, provided we don't take either out of the building, and also to have a stand for merchandise. We are also obliged to have another stand, offering information about the breed.

We need help with the following:

1. People to help with setting up the stalls / tables, on the evening of Saturday 5th September, from about 4.30pm. (We will need to get an early start to the judging on Saturday morning, so doing it then isn't really an option)
2. People to help take it all down again on Sunday IMMEDIATELY after the end of the Show.
3. People to man the information stand.
4. Possibly people to help out with selling merchandise.

Anyone who can help out, please could you contact Angi Hodges, swds@blueyonder.co.uk / 0121 788 0752 / 07792 298 090. If you use the e-mail or have to leave a message on one of the phones, your address, as well as e-mail and / or a contact phone number would be very helpful.

Utility Gundog Sub Group

On 9th July, Ian Murray received the following message from Hilary Gould of the Kennel Club:

'At the meeting of the Kennel Club Committee yesterday it was agreed that the Spanish Water Dog should stay in the Gundog Group, but it is still necessary to have this ratified at the next Kennel Club sub committee meeting in the middle of September and also at the Kennel Club General Committee meeting in October.'

The next stage is for us to decide which activities we wish the Spanish Water Dog to pursue in the new Utility Gundog Group. Ideas please to the Committee via our Acting Secretary, Kylee Noad, 103 Primrose Hill, Lydney, Glos, GL15 5SW, email kylee.swd@btinternet.com.

Jasper - Our first  rehomed dog

We have just received these photos of Jasper, the first dog rehomed through our Spanish Welfare and Rehoming Group. His owner, Julie, tells us that he is doing really well and has just collected his Flyball Dog Graduate Reward for gaining 3000 points. She says that he'd have even more points if it wasn't for the occasional 'blonde' moments he has!

Well done to Jasper, and to all his family, it's lovely to hear that things are going so well.

We have some news from the Netherlands. Their Club members are interested in our Water Training and wish to do something similar.

01/02/2007

The Spanish Water Dog Club wishes to announce that we have had confirmation from the Kennel Club to say that Spanish Water Dogs will be transferred from the 'Imported Breeds Register' to the 'Breed Register' as from January 2008. This is another major milestone in the history of the breed in the UK and also means that we will be eligible for a greater variety of classes at shows and events. I personally, would like to thank everyone on the Committee and others who helped with the application to the Kennel Club that led to this successful outcome.
