Ripple's Diary Update

Hi,

It's a while since I wrote in my diary but I wanted to tell you about our hols, otherwise known as 'CASTLE WATCH'. Squiffy (my mum) and I went with 'Er and 'Im Indoors for a super holiday up north, by the seaside. We didn't need a bucket and spade 'cos we had our ball chukker and other throwing toys.
We stayed in a lovely place with pine floors and the living room was upstairs with a balcony. This was the view from our window..........

Just outside we had cows and a family of mummy rabbit and five babies to watch but they stayed at home the day the fox came.

We went out each day and saw castles nearly everywhere we went. This is Dunstanburgh Castle, the nearest......

Then we saw Bamburgh Castle.........

Then off to Alnwick Castle........'Er Indoors once lived there but that is ancient history!

The rest of the time we played on the beach or went rock climbing......

Love  Ripple

PS It wasn't me who pushed that rock over!

Wanda Sooby writes.......

Taffle and Ripple joined me in my  venture to run a mile for 'Sport Relief' Once the leads were untangled and the dogs were pointing in the right direction we set off and completed the course in 11.03 minutes. Not quite 'Roger Bannister' but at least we were not last over the line. There were quite a few dogs spectating but only two of them running.

The Spanish Water Dogs of Skye

Earlier this year my partner Eileen Armstrong and I sent some pictures of Dali, Skye's first ever Spanish Water Dog which were published on these pages. We hope it has given some pleasure to club members. So now I've done a few new images. Click here for the pictures

Well eight months on and the population of Spanish Water Dogs on the Isle of Skye has doubled when Josalyn Seve arrived in July for his new life next to the sea to join his Uncle Dali. Well as you can imagine the two boys are having a ball and getting on like old mates. Seve is now almost 7 months and is about the same size as Dali, is a real fireball and loves his life up here in the village of Ord. Our house is just about 50m from the beach with stunning  views over Loch Eishort to the Cuillin Hills. Both boys love the water although Seve is learning the ropes and, as yet, is not quite as bold as his Uncle who continues to dive in and under the water like a submarine. He has now taken to jumping off the small slipway near the beach into 10' of water to retrieve logs and seaweed as well as his favourite Kong. Seve watches with interest and amusement and no doubt when the weather picks up a little will spend as much time swimming around as Dali does. Fighting for the Kong is a great sport, followed normally by a dip in the river mouth in Ord, where the river meets the sea and the fresh water makes a welcome change to the salt of the sea.

There can  be no finer place for  a Spanish Water Dog and so from Eileen, Dali, Seve and me we send our very best wishes to club members and once again a huge thanks to Lyn Napier-Wong for finding us two fantastic dogs who have given us so much pleasure and memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to seeing members and their dogs in Skye, a website (www.cottageguide.co.uk/thehirselord) has information on our self-catering cottage in the village of Ord, Isle of Skye

Canine Cross Country

A number of owners and their SWDs took part, recently in an unusual but most enjoyable sport, canine cross country. This is a sport where the handler runs with one or two dogs over a distance of five kilometers for serious runners or half that distance for the 'Have a go' people. The sport is organised by CaniX and events take place all round the UK. This particular event took place in the beautiful venue of Sherwood Forest and the day was warm, sunny and dry, enhancing the autumn colours and creating tracks strewn with dry leaves, a stunning sight.
Taking part for the first time were a number of SWDs, Pardo, Saffi, Rosa, Anton, Squiffy, Ripple and Taffle with handlers, Janet Peart, Margaret Mills, Diane Philipson, myself, my husband John and a non-member, Julie Williams. Julie is an experienced runner and ran the full course with Pardo and Rosa in a creditable time while the rest of us opted for the shorter course with the aim of finishing, which we all did.
The serious runners came with all the 'gear', running kit, special waist belts, elastic leads and harnesses similar to those used in dog sledding. The dogs were then attached by the lead to the runner's belt and were encouraged to run out in front, assisting the runner by putting some strain on the lead. Quite a number of dogs taking part were Huskies and Malamutes, for which this sport was very much designed but the rest were of a variety of breeds. I was handling Taffle, who promptly took on the correct position and I certainly appreciated the help.
Although our times were nothing to write home about we very much enjoyed our day and intend to take part again in the future. Details about this sport can be found on the internet at www.cani-cross.co.uk.

Miguel and Manchita’s Trip to the Beach

Miguel and Manchita had a trip to the beach last month with Manchita’s daughter, Catalina, and her family. And of course Teasel had to tag along too!

Enjoying a run on the sand. (beach 1, beach 9)

Last one in ….! (beach 2)

‘I’ve got the ball!’ (beach 3)

Manchita and Teasel take to the waves. (beach 4)

Cat demonstrates how to jump for the ball. (beach 5, beach 7)

Miguel has a go. (beach 6, beach 8)

Arnie takes a breather (beach 10)

Despite the grey day a great time was had by all.

As an aside we were fascinated to watch the way Catalina used her tail when running for the ball. Using it as a rudder she was far quicker and more accurate when turning and catching the ball than the other, docked, dogs were. And as you can see her jumping is just phenomenal!

Water Training at Rother Valley

The last water training session for the year took place at Rother Valley Country Park in October 2007. Although numbers participating were lower than usual it was a bright, sunny day and all of the dogs were kept on the move for much of the time. This was good because the water was a little on the cool side and it meant dogs were not left standing in the cool air for any length of time waiting to go back in and owners were able to run the dogs across the grassed areas to help dry them off and keep them warm. A number of experienced dogs were given the opportunity to haul the canoe in, complete with a person inside, and most achieved this successfully.

Di's Weekend

I felt compelled to express my thanks to all the people who helped Di to make this weekend such a GREAT SUCCESS.
After the two previous cancellations the weather was at least clement to us, it only sprinkled a little bit and there were no damp spirits! The whole event ran like clockwork, the venue, hospitality and food were fantastic. The tips and demos were well recieved by all and I am sure we all went home with loads more insight into our complex and fabulous dogs. I look forward to next year and hope I express the feeling of all who attended by saying a super big THANKS to Di.

Kind Regards

Pat Booth

Ripple's Diary Volume Two

Hello Members. Now that I have finished writing my pieces for 'the book' I can free up the computer and move over to let Ripple have a go. She has made it very plain that she has some more pieces to add to her diary and is a bit disgruntled because it is some time since the keyboard was available. So, it's over to Ripple.

You will find the current edition of her diary at the link below....

From Eileen Armstrong on Isle of Skye about her SWD Dali, we are keeping Dali busy or rather he is keeping us busy! Thought you might like to see some pics of what we get up to here on Skye when the weather is good and it certainly has been these past 10 days. Dali has a fascination with seaweed and you can see from the pics he will go to all lengths to get some. He diligently swims back to the shore with a clump in his mouth and then comes back for more. His diving skills are progressing well and we have great fun watching him in amazement. Have to say his skills are all self-taught!!!! Link to pics

This is from a non member, but thought the story was worth repeating

Hi There

Was very interested to find your web page and club. Found it very informative and helpful.

Jessie is two years old now and we rescued her from a dog sanctuary in Spain when she was about 15 weeks old, she had started her life in the window of a pet shop in L'Alfas del pi and for some reason did not sell (she was so cute) and when she got to old was just dumped in the sanctuary

When we took her home she was so shy, she would not move from the spot where you put her, she did not know how to play, to clean herself or anything but we also have a three year old german shepherd (rescued as well in Spain) called Lulu who has taught Jessie all she needs to know and the pair are inseparable, play together, sleep together and cry if ever apart.

In June last year we finally got both their passports sorted and brought them back to the UK with us.

Just thought this little story may be of interest to you.
Kind Regards

linda & Martin

I'm not sure if I am sending this to the right person or not. Its my dad (Graham Pidcock) with the spanish water dog (Sancha) and I wanted to send some photos to show everyone how good Sancha is with one year old boy Liam and that even though she is only a puppy herself (10 months) she knows to be gentle of Liam.

Liam and I had to move back in with my parents suddenly after they had only had Sancha for two weeks back in July. Obviously there has been the odd time she's knocked Liam down or hurt him but nothing serious and she's chewed some of his toys. However, Sancha never seems to mind that Liam loves to be with her following her around, playing with her toys (was a frog that Liam loved so much we had to buy him one similar but he still wanted Sancha's), he's now at the height to reach Sancha's dog biscuits and gets them down for her daily trying to eat them too. In the garden the are partners in crime playing in the mud and puddles.

Picture 12. Even is though Liam is being taught its wrong to get in Sancha's basket, if she is ever in there he loves to climb in with her. (He is removed asap normally)

Picture 13. Reading to her

Picture 17. Playing tug of war with her, Sancha never pulls hard even though she is capable if dragging Liam across the room.

Picture 32. Liam playing with her, she only licks him.

Picture 99. Liam's party on Sunday - house full of children between 6 months - 7 years. She sat in the conservatory and watched everyone, Liam went to sit with her for timeout from the noise and madness.

Picture 280. July 2006, first time they met was love straight away

One night Liam was crying in his cot and Sancha could hear him (she was in her cage for bed in back room) and she kept barking as if to let us know Liam was in distress. My dad had to go down and reassure Sancha he was alright before she could settle.

I just wanted to let everyone know how good she is with Liam and his friends, and that anyone with doubts about the breed and children shouldn't worry.

Liam loves Sancha and I think Sancha loves him too.

Hi, we are Lagos new owners, thought we would send you some photos and an
update of how we are getting on.

Lago is settling in very well and has made himself at home here! We have
has him for almost 6 weeks now, but it feels like he's been here forever! We
have taught him to stay, wait, rollover, and he is now coming to us when
called, when off the lead, although can be a bit stubborn if he thinks he has
got something better to do! We take him to the fields every day and he loves
it when we "chase him", he runs like mad!

He has made friends with other dogs in the village and loves playing with
them. He has got his own blanket and soft bed which he loves, and some new
toys. All in all, he's a brilliant dog and we can't imagine life without him!
Keep you posted.

Regards, the Pitteways

August's Water Training at Rother Valley Country Park.
A number of members and their dogs took part and had a most enjoyable day. The weather was cool but not unpleasant. Mark Boag supplied the Canadian canoe for the day and it was an interesting experience, not as forgiving as our inflatable but fortunately no-one got dunked! All of the dogs worked with enthusiasm and succeeded at most of the tasks without too much effort. This breed is a joy to watch working in an environment that is so natural to them. Well done everyone who took part.
